- Description: Friends of Sapelo (FOS) is a non-profit volunteer organization created to support the research, educational and outreach mission of the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve (SINERR). The membership of FOS consists generally of amateur naturalists, birders, photographers, hikers, kayakers, beachcombers, etc. who have come together to support SINERR because of their individual related interests. This opportunity to provide support to the professional marine biology community has been richly exciting to all of us and the educational experiences have far surpassed any expectations we had going into this.
Doris Cohrs, aka "Phyto-Goddess", monitors Post Office Creek. This site is a floating dock located on Sapelo Island on Post Office Creek which is a small tributary off of Barn Creek running into the Duplin River which runs north-south along the west (inland) side of Sapelo Island. The dock is located adjacent to the Sapelo Island Post Office and is also used for visitor tour presentations, cast-net demonstrations, and more. Doris takes the ferry over to Sapelo Island to collect her water sample for a weekly monitoring report.
