Kiawah Island Community Association-Lakes Department: Kiawah Island, SC

  • Sites: Bass Pond and Cinder Creek Boat Launch
  • Group Volunteers: Norm Shea, Carrie Manson
  • Description: The KICA Lakes Department manages 116 brackish detention ponds on Kiawah Island. Bass Pond is a 33-acre lake that is directly connected to a Kiawah River tributary through a weir structure. Cinder Creek is a Stono River tributary that supplies tidal inflow via 2 pipe connections to 12 ponds on the Island. Samples are collected at both sites on a weekly basis. The information recorded is useful to the Lakes Department and the community, providing an indication of the phytoplankton populations in the other 103 ponds on the Island.
