Volunteers

Little Lagoon Preservation Society , Gulf Shores, Alabama

  • Sites: We sample four key sites: Site 1 close to the fresh water feed from Lake Shelby at the southeast end, Sites 2 and 3 across from the pass that connects us to the Gulf of Mexico on the northeast and northwest shores, and Site 4 the southwest end near Gator Lake
  • Group Volunteer: Dennis Hatfield
  • Description: Little Lagoon is a unique body of water for swimming, fishing and boating. Those of us who enjoy Little Lagoon have stewardship responsibilities over this precious resource. We are working with scientists from Dauphin Island Sea Lab and the Phytoplankton Monitoring Network to understand the challenges of keeping Little Lagoon healthy. Once we have chemical, bacteriological, and phytoplankton baselines, we can spot trends in quality and make better decisions about preservation.
