Phytoplankton Monitoring Network

Promoting a better understanding of harmful algal blooms by way of volunteer monitoring

Volunteers

Provincetown High School, Provincetown, MA

  • Site: Macmillan Pier
  • Group Volunteers: Meri Ratzel, John Hanlon
  • Description: Our 9th grade biology students sample the upwelling site on Macmillan Pier weekly. Provincetown is an electic town - with an economy based on commercial fishing, the visual and performing arts, and the tourism attracted to the beauty of Cape Cod's National Seashore. Cape Cod Bay is a protected area for the critically endangered North Atlantic Right Whale. Our phytoplankton studies complement food web studies being done on zooplankton and right whale habitats.

We are currently studying spring blooms, and will soon begin studying the dinoflagellate, Alexandrium, associated with harmful algae blooms in the Gulf of Maine. We have just started to count our cells, and will always be learning new identification!
