Volunteers allow a far greater coverage of HAB and phytoplankton monitoring. The network was established as a cost effective means to monitor HAB distribution in areas where this data was absent. Thus, the PMN offers an ideal vehicle to explore the interrelationships between humans and the coastal environment, at the same time providing volunteers with meaningful opportunities for hands-on engagement in coastal science.
