Forensics Team

The Marine Forensics Team works to enforce our nation’s wildlife and fisheries laws. The team uses DNA or lipid analyses to identify the species of evidence (fish fillets, trace evidence on knives or spearguns, blood spatter on a boat deck…) in cases where the NOAA Office for Law Enforcement suspects a crime has been committed. Identifying the species involved can lead to either conviction or exoneration of a suspect. Convictions help to enforce laws such as the ESA, MMPA, and MSA, which are designed to protect valuable fisheries stocks and threatened marine species from exploitation. Exoneration of defendants saves the both defendants and the government time, money, and effort expended on needless prosecutions. [More]
