Cooperative Oxford Laboratory Library

The Cooperative Oxford Laboratory Library is one of the most scholastically valuable single collections of pathobiological marine science material in the country. It is located at the Cooperative Oxford Laboratory, NOAA, NOS, CCEHBR in Oxford, Maryland. It is the only collection of its type on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and on the Delmarva Peninsula. This highly specialized collection was established to support and advance the research needs of the scientific, technical and management staff of the Cooperative Oxford Laboratory.

Additionally, this mission includes providing information services to researchers and scholars throughout NOAA, NOS, CCEHBR, visiting scientists, area universities and colleges, private industry, state agencies, county government agencies, international agencies and the general public. The library's resources are readily accessible to partner agencies including the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The COL Library is an integral part of the NOAA Library and Information Network (NLIN) which consists of 28 other libraries. Each library in the network has a unique collection. The COL Library's disciplines include marine pathobiology, habitat conservation, fisheries management and ecology.

The greater part of the collection consists of current subscriptions to approximately 65 scientific journals. Through the library's web site we are linked to three other libraries in South Carolina – the Marine Resources Library (Charleston), NOAA's Charleston Laboratory Library and the College of Charleston Library giving us access to their holdings of over 15,000 journals. Our bound collection numbers about 14,600 items. The library also has more than 25,000 reprints, a newsletter collection, dissertation and these collection, photograph collection, newspaper file, map collection, coral reprints file and extensive government publications.

The library is a member of the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) network with full access to the holding of over 60,000 member libraries in 112 countries. The COL Library is a valued member of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine which is dedicated to providing all U.S. health professionals with equal access to biomedical information. This network has over 5,700 members and affiliates.

Although the COL Library is not a lending library to individuals, the collection is available with some restrictions to anyone interested in study of areas within the scope of the collection. Prior arrangements should be made with the Librarian or the Director to arrange a visit.
