R/V Laidly is a 55-foot steel hull vessel that serves as a platform for scientific
research in the Chesapeake Bay.
Cooperative Oxford Laboratory scientists and partners use the vessel to collect samples
of water, sediment, and organisms living in bay waters including fish and molluscs.
State-of-the-art electronics allow the Captain and scientists to accurately pinpoint
areas for collection of scientific data.
R/V Laidly is propelled by two 400 horsepower Cummins engines and has a cruising
speed of 20 knots, with a top end speed of 22 knots.
R/V Laidly’s speed and central location allow for easy access to a variety of sites
in the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays. Tier 2 engines and a unique bilge cleaning
system support safe and environmentally responsible vessel operations.
The Captain of R/V Laidly comes to COL
with over 35 years of seamanship on the Chesapeake Bay. His experience and expertise
are integral to the success of COL’s
marine and estuarine research program.
Captain Collier currently holds Master OUTV and Master 100 Ton licenses. He has studied
under Master, Mates, and Pilots and the Chesapeake Maritime Institute.
